1. time 表示倍数的用法:
说“A是B的X倍”(或“A比B大X-1倍”)常见的有以下三种表达方式:
A ...X times B
The average adult in the country consumes a lot of sugar, more than five times what the body needs. 这个国家的一般成年人消费大量的糖,超过身体需要的五倍以上。
Nigeria is three times the size of GREat Britain. (Kartun) 尼日利亚的面积是英国的三倍。(或:尼日利亚的面积比英国大两倍。)
B ... X times as ... as B
The new playground is three times as large as the old one. 新运动场有旧运动场三倍那么大。(或:新运动场比旧运动场大两倍。)
C...X times more than B
The dictionary costs me three times more expensive than the one she bought in Shanghai ten years ago. 买这本词典我花的钱是十年前她在上海买那本所花的钱的十倍。
The population of this country is ten times larger than ours. 这个国家的人口是我国的十倍。
因此,以下三个句子意思相同,都是“2000年钢的产量是1950年的八倍”或“2000年钢的产量比1950年增加了七倍”。例:
The steel output of 2000 is 8 times that of 1950.
The steel output of 2000 is 8 times as large as that of 1950.
The steel output of 2000 is 8 times larger than that of 1950.
表示增加的动词increase, 后接“by + X times”,表示包括基数在内的增加数,即:“增加到X倍”或“增加了X-- 1倍”。例:
The small town consumed 32,000 kg. of meat in 1975 and 96,000 kg. of meat in 1985. The meat consumption of this town increased three times in only ten years. (《大学英语精读》第三册第235页) 这个小镇1975年消费32,000公斤肉,1985年消费96,000公斤肉。只不过十年,这个小镇肉的消费量就增长了三倍。
这一结构如果换成decrease, 则表示“减少到1 / X”或“减少了(X-- 1)/X”。注意汉语里不说“减少了1 / X倍”。例:
The small town consumed 32,000 kg. of meat in 1975 and 96,000 kg. of meat in 1985. The meat consumption of this town decreased three times in only ten years. 这个镇子1975年消费32,000公斤肉,1985年消费96,000公斤肉,只不过十年,这个镇子肉的消费量就减少了三分之二。
time 表示倍数,一般限于表示三倍或三倍以上,而表示两倍,通常用twice。
2. time 也可以表示减少;注意汉语里不用“倍”表示减少,而说“几分之几”。以下两种说法都是“A是B 的X分之一”:
A is X times less / smaller than B
A is less / smaller than B by X times
例:“1950年钢的产量是2000 年的八分之一” 可以表达为:
The steel output of 1950 is 8 times less than that of 2000.
The steel output of 1950 is less than that of 2000 by 8 times .
3.百分比表示增加或减少的用法:
用百分比表示增加或减少,通常表示净增或净减数,即“增加或减少了……”。例:
The small town consumed 384 tons of grain in 1975 and 288 tons of grain in 1985. In ten years the grain consumption of this town decrease by 25%. (《大学英语精读》第三册第234页) 1979年,这个小镇消费384吨谷物,1985年消费288吨,十年间这个镇子所消费的谷物减少了25%。
The cost has increased / decreased by 20%. 成本增加/降低了百分之二十。
The output of rice this year is 300% GREater than that in 1949. 今年稻谷的产量比1949年增加了三倍。
There is a 300% increase in the output of rice between 1999 and 1949. 1949年至1999年,稻谷的产量增加了三倍。
