11.high 和 highly
high表示空间高度(to or at a high level in position ),也指“声音高”(sound)。例:
They enjoy climbing high. 他们喜欢登高。
The kite is flying high. 风筝正在高飞。
The soldier held his head high. 士兵高昂着头。
highly用于比喻义,指“很高程度上”:
I've always esteemed him highly.我总是非常看重他。
The suggestion was highly spoken of . 这建议受到人们的重视。
Paper-making industry is highly developed in that country. 造纸业在那个国家非常发达。
另外,在复合词中大多用high,而作形容词或分词的修饰语时大多用highly:
My wife doesn't like high-heeled shoes. 我妻子不喜欢高跟鞋。
It's highly amusing. 这十分好笑 。
He wanted more out of life(A),not just working at(B) high-paid(C) jobs or spending night on the street playing games(D).
(1991考研) C错,应改为highly paid。他希望从生活中得到更多,不仅仅是在高报酬的岗位上工作,也不仅仅是晚上在街上游荡玩乐。
12. dead 和deadly
dead 是“突然地”(suddenly)和“完全地”(completely):
He was dead tired.他精疲力竭。
She stopped dead. 她突然停了下来。
deadly是“死一般地”或“非常”:deadly pale (惨白),deadly serious (非常严肃), deadly dull(非常乏味)
13. cheap 和 cheaply
cheap 作副词用与cheaply没有什么区别,都是at a very low price 的意思:
I was lucky to buy the car so cheap(ly). 我很幸运,这车买得很便宜。
当然有时从修辞上来考虑,还是要有所选择:
The early settlers(A) on the prairie(B) built(C) sod houses quickly, simply,and were cheap(D). (TOEFL,76.2)
(D错,应改为cheaply, cheaply 与quickly, simply 结构上平行)早期的拓荒者在大草原上建起了简易的草房子。
14. late 和lately
late 是“迟,晚”(after the usual ,arranged , or expected time);lately 则是“最近”(in the recent past):
He arrived ten minutes late. 他迟到了五分钟。
Have you heard from him lately 你最近收到过他的信吗?
15.low和lowly
low 是“(空间、程度)低”(in or to a low position, point , deGREe, manner)或“低音”((in music) in or with deep notes)
Her head was bent low. 她低下了头。
He spoke low but clearly.他声音很低,但是很清楚。
We usually buy low and sell high. 我们通常低价买进高价卖出。
lowly 常作形容词用,是“卑微的”(low in rank, position or deGREe); 作副词用也常常是这个意思:
He bowed lowly before the queen.他向皇后谦卑地鞠躬行礼。
Our goods are lowly priced. 我方货物价格定得很低。
