Old age has always been thought of as   1   worst age to be,but it is not necessary for   2   old to be unhappy.With    3   age should come    4   wisdom and    5   ability to help    6   others with    7   advice wisely given.   8   old can have    9   joy of seeing their children making    10   proGREss in   11   life,they can watch their grandchildren growing up around them;and perhaps best of all, they can,if their life has been    12    useful one, feel    13   happiness of having come through    14   battle of life safely and of having reached    15   time when they can lie back and rest, leaving    16   others to continue    17   fight.Thus it can be seen that   18   old person has every reason to live joyfully.

III.Comprehensive Exercises

A.Reading Comprehension

Advertisers tend to think big and perhaps this is why they're always coming in for criticism. Their critics seem to resent them because they have a flair for self-promotion and because they have so much money to throw around.“It's iniquitous,”they say,“that this entirely unproductive industry(if we can call it that)should absorb millions of pounds each year.It only goes to show how much profit the big companies are making. Why don't they stop advertising and reduce the price of their goods? After all,it's the consumer who pays”

The poor old consumer! He'd have to pay a GREat deal more if advertising didn't create mass markets for products. It is precisely because of the heavy advertising that consumer goods are so cheap. But we get the wrong idea if we think the only purpose of advertising is to sell goods.Another equally important function is to inform.A great deal of the knowledge we have about household goods derives largely from the advertisements we read.Advertisements introduce us to new products or remind us of the existence of ones we already know about.Supposing you wanted to buy a washing-machine,it is more than likely that you would obtain details regarding performance, price, etc.,from an advertisement.

Lots of people pretend that they never read advertisements, but this claim may be seriously doubted. It is hardly possible not to read advertisements these days. And what fun they often are, too!Just think what a railway station or a newspaper would be like without advertisements. Would you enjoy gazing at a blank wall or reading railway bye-laws while waiting for a train?Would you like to read only closely printed columns of news in your daily paper?A cheerful, witty advertisement makes such a difference to a drab wall of a newspaper full of the daily ration of calamities

We must not forget, either, that advertising makes a positive contribution to our pockets. Newspapers, commercial radio and television companies could not subsist without this source of revenue. The fact that we pay so little for our daily paper,or can enjoy so many broadcast programmes is due entirely to the money spent by advertisers.Just think what a newspaper would cost if we had to pay its full price!

Another thing we mustn't forget is the“small ads”.Which are in virtually every newspaper and magazine. What a tremendously useful service they perform for the community! Just about anything can be accomplished through these columns. For instance, you can find a job,buy or sell a house, announce a birth, marriage or death in what used to be called the“hatch, match and dispatch”column but by far the most fascinating section is the personal or‘agony'column. No other item in a newspaperprovides such entertaining reading or offers such a deep insight into human nature. It's the best advertisement for advertising there is!

B.(I)Translate the underlined parts into Chinese

For most of us,work is the central, dominating fact of life.We spend more than half our conscious hours at work, preparing for work, traveling to and from work. What we do there largely determines our standard of living and to aconsiderable extent the status we are accorded by our fellow citizens as well.It is sometimes said that because leisure has become more important the indignities and injustices of work can be pushed into a corner, that because most work is pretty intolerable, the people who do it should be compensated for its boredom, frustrations and humiliations, concentrating their hopes on the other parts of their lives.I reject that as a counsel of despair. For the foreseeable future the material and psychological rewards which work can provide, and the conditions in which work is done, will continue to play a vital part in determining the satisfaction that life can offer.Yet only a small minority can control the pace at which their work offers scope for creativity, imagination,or initiative.

Inequality at work and in work is still one of cruelest and most glaring forms of inequality in our society. We cannot hope to solve the more obvious problems of industrial life, may of which arise directly or indirectly from the frustrations created by inequality at work, unless we tackle it head -on.Still less can we hope to create a decent and humane society.

Standard English is the variety of English which is usually used in print and which is normally taught in schools and to non-native speakers learning the language. It is also the variety which is normally    1   by educated people and used in news broadcasts and other   2   situations.The difference between standard and nonstandard,it should be noted, has    3   in principle to do with differences between formal and colloquial    4   ;standard English has well as formal variants.

5   ,the standard variety of English is based on the London    6   of English that developed after the Norman Conquest resulted in the removal of the Court from Winchester to London. This dialect became the one    7   by the educated, and it was developed and promoted    8   a model,or norm, for wider and wider segments of society .It was also the   9   that was carried overseas, but not one unaffected by such export.Today,   10    English is arranged to the extent that the grammar and vocabulary of English are    11   the same everywhere in the world where English is used;   12   among local standards is really quite minor,   13   the Singapore,South Africa, and Irish varieties are really very    14    different from one another so far as grammar and vocabulary are    15   .Indeed,standard English is so powerful that it exerts a tremendous   16   on all local varieties,to the extent that many of long-established dialects of England have    17   much of their vigor and there isconsiderable pressure on them to be    18   . This latter situation is not unique    19   English:it is also true in other countries where processes of standardization are    20   .But it sometimes creates problems for speakers who try to strike some kind of compromise between local norms and national, even supranational(跨国的)ones.
