Many people think a telephone is essential .But I think it is a pest and a time waster .Very often you find it impossible to escape from some idle or curious chatter—box ,or from somebody who wants something for nothing .If you have a telephone in your own house ,you will admit that it tends to ring when you are asleep ,or in the middle of a meal or a conversation, or when you are just going out ,or when you are taking your bath. Are you strong –minded enough to ignore it , to say to yourself, “Ah ,well ,it will all be the same in a hundred years’ time” You are not .You think there may be some important news or messages for you .I can assure you that if a message is really important it will reach you sooner or later .Have you never rushed dripping from the bath ,or chewing from the table, or dazed from the bed ,only to be told that you are a wrong number?

But you will say ,you need not have your name printed in the telephone directory ,and you can have a telephone which is only usable for outgoing calls .Besides ,you will say, isn’t it important to have a telephone in case of emergency—illness ,an accident ,or fire? Of course ,you are right ,but here in a thickly populated country like England one is seldom far from a telephone in case of dreadful necessity.

I think perhaps I had better try to justify myself by trying to prove that what I like is good .I admit that in different circumstances—if I were a tycoon (business VIP) ,for instance ,or bed –ridden I might find a telephone essential . But then if I were a taxi—driver I should find a car essential.

Let me put it another way: there are two things for which the English seem to show particular talent; one is mechanical invention, the other is literature .My own business happens to be with the use of words but I see I must now stop using them .For I have just been handed a slip of paper to say that somebody is waiting to speak to me on the telephone .I think I had better answer it .After all ,one never knows , it may be something important.

59.The passage is mainly discussing    .

C.whether it’s necessary to answer all phone calls

A.thinks the telephone should go out of our life
B.likes to be different from other people

Normally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each course that he attends gives him a credit that he may count towards a deGREe .In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty—six courses each lasting for one semester .A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course ,though this is not in fact done as a regular practice.

For every course that he follows a student is given a grade ,which is recorded ,and the record is available for the student to show to prospective employers .All this imposes a constant pressure and strain of work ,but in spite of this some students still find time for GREat activity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm .Students who advise the academic authorities usually perform the effective work of maintaining discipline .Any student ,who is thought to have broken the rules ,for example by cheating ,has to appear before a student court .With the enormous numbers of students ,the operation of the system does involve a certain amount of activity. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.

Digital camera

The newly invented digital camera is fascinating; you can take pictures without film. You can transfer and exhibit your picture globally in a few seconds through the Internet .The image stored in a hard drive will never wear out like the traditional photos .Digital cameras also satisfy the impatient photographer by allowing them to view their masterpiece in real time.

Unlike the images of traditional cameras formed by chemical reaction ,the digital camera works as an image digitizer itself .It’s made of CCD(charge –coupled device ), a small grid of tiny light –sensitive cells .When struck by light ,each cell sends out an electrical signal whose waveform characteristics vary depending on the intensity (强度)of light .The signal from each cell is changed into a digital value and stored in the camera’s memory or on an electronic storage medium. A “picture” is reduced to a very long list of numbers waiting to be converted back into visual form. Processed through a computer ,each value becomes a pixel; pixels are reassembled in the original grid pattern and displayed or printed.

The image resolution(分辨率)of a digital camera depends on the CCD. More cells on the CCD mean more pixels on the image ,which gives GREater detail and higher image resolution .The early digital camera had resolution only up to 400 pixels per image ,cost several thousand dollars ,and was mainly for business use .Now there are more choices for consumers in different price ranges . The variety of digital camera has amazed first adapters to buy the products.

The digital camera technology is moving very fast .A few months ago ;most of the digital cameras were equipped with focus lenses ,but now most new models are equipped with auto focus lenses at reasonable prices .With all these inventions and technology advancements ,the future of digital camera is bright ,and digital cameras may eventually replace traditional cameras.

People say teenagers are no good. They make too much noise in shopping malls; they drive recklessly up and down America’s main streets; they carry chips on their shoulders as big as the Sears Tower. And at least some of the time those things are true. But we shouldn’t forget that there are hard moments in the life of a teenager too.

I watched such a moment not long ago at a woman’s funeral(葬礼). I didn’t expect the event to affect me. Through much of the ceremony, in fact, I remained unmoved.

Then her teenage grandson stepped forward. With his very first deep breath, every heart in that church was achingly reminded of something we had all forgotten. Softly he began: “I want to share a few values that Nana taught me. She never failed to see light in any situation. When our family dog would literally attact her, what would Nana say? ‘Oh, what beautiful markings that dog has. That was Nana.

“She was a strong woman who often lived in the shadow of my grandpa, who was a successful businessman in this city. But she was the one behind the scenes who provided the strength and support for Grandpa’s career,” he said, with a voice now trembling. “That was Nana’s way.”

Through a muffled sob, he continued. “Whenever she did anything worth recognition, you’d have to hear about it from a different source, because she was never one to brag.”

Finally, in a voice breaking free of sorrow, he looked up and said, “Nana taught me courage. She put up an incredible fight to the end, when she died peacefully, which is how she lived her life. That was Nana’s way, and I hope I can carry on in the same manner.”

There are no hearts as sensitive as those of teenagers, because everything is happening to them for the first time. The trouble with teenagers is that they haven’t learned to be controlled.

When that boy rose to speak about the woman who surely had been his truest ally and dearest friend, his honest voice dragged each of us out into the open where we could no longer hide in the calm ritual. He exposed us to the truth about this very real woman who believed in a boy who probably tried the patience of many adults. He reminded us that his grandmother was more than another dot on the chart of life and death.

All over again we felt those powerful losses crisscrossing our own hearts, and we knew that when you say good-bye to a beloved grandparent, you say good-bye to something happy, something young in yourself. And that something never really returns, and the pain never really goes away.

72.According to the first paragraph, _____________.
A.young people should keep quiet before the public
B.people don’t think highly of the teenagers
C.people shouldn’t forget the young people
D.young people are living a hard life
73.From the boy’s speech, we know his grandmother ____________.
A.was a weak woman living in the shadow of his grandpa
B.liked dogs very much even if they often attacked her
C.could see everything around her though she was old
D.had GREat influence over the boy when she was alive
74.We can infer from the passage that the boy ___________.
A.was filled with sadness and gave up finishing his talk
B.was always very good at expressing himself
C.practiced a lot in order to give a moving speech
D.had GREat difficulty in accepting the loss of Nana
75.The writer wanted to tell the readers ____________.
A.the young people were too weak to face the fact
B.the young people had to learn to control themselves
C.the adults could learn something valuable from the young
D.the adults should teach the young how to deal with the death

情景作文
Possible version:
The number of the traffic accidents has been growing in recent years. As can be seen from the graph, there were 570,000 traffic accidents, and 109,000 people were killed in 2004. By October 2005, the number of the accidents had reached 566,000, in which 95,600 people lost their lives. While the number of the cars makes up only 2% of the total of the world, the rate of the deaths is 22%, making China a country with the highest death rate of traffic accidents in the world.
The main reason why so many traffic accidents have happened is that the roads are too crowded and people ignore traffic rules. In order to reduce the traffic accidents, first, the government should take some proper measures, such as developing public traffics. Second, people should obey traffic rules, especially the drivers.
Only when people have decided to take action, will traffic problems be solved.

M:Excuse me. Can you help me? I was looking for the Lecture Hall.
W:Maybe I can, actually. I’m looking for the Lecture Hall, too. I think it’s in the Library. Are you
a new student?
M:Yes, I am.
Text 3.
M:Rose, I don’t know what to buy for Kathy’s birthday. How about a music CD or a box of
chocolate?
W:Well, I’ve already bought her a music CD, so why not get her some flowers?
M:Yes, that’s a good idea – I will.
Text 4.
M:Mrs. Turner, I didn’t do my homework because I didn’t understand it.
W:Sit down now Ken, I’ll explain it as soon as everyone is quiet.
Text 5.
W:How was your interview?
M:I couldn’t feel better about it ! The questions were very fair, and I seemed to find an answer for
all of them
Text 6.
M:Have you read the story “The Gift of the Magi” written by O. Henry?
W:Yes. I enjoy reading his short stories. What I admire him most is that he started to write stories
while he was in prison. Who is your favorite American writer, Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, or Jack London?
M:Jack London. He was born of a poor family in San Francisco in 1876. He left school at fourteen, and became a sailor, a hunter, and an explorer. In 1897 he went to the Klondike in Canada. London found adventures that he put into his most famous stories and novels. London continued to travel until a few years before his death in 1916. Now I’m reading his story “Love of Life”. I’m sure you will like his works.
W:GREat! Can you lend it to me after you finish it?
M:No problem.
Text 7.
M:Hello, can I help you?
W:Yes, I’d like to go on a sailing holiday this summer in Italy.
M:Have you been sailing before?
W:No. I wanted to go to Sweden last year, but I didn’t have enough money.
M:Well it is quite expensive. Sailing holidays start at about  three hundred pounds.
W:Yes, my friends went in August last year. They paid four hundred and fifty pounds each. The most I can pay is three hundred and eighty pounds.
M:Well, that should be enough. Would you like to be by the sea or a lake?
W:Well, I’d prefer a lake in the mountains.
M:Okay. The Aqua Centre in north Italy will be best for you. That costs £370.
W:Okay. Can I pay by credit card? I haven’t got my cheque book.
M:Yes, that’s fine.
Text 8.
W:And how did you find Cambridge when you first arrived?
M:Well. I like it here. I think the city is very beautiful.
W:What about your accommodation? Was that OK?
M:Yes, OK. At first I stayed with a family for three months. They were very kind to me but they had three young children and I found it difficult to study.
W:Right. I see.
M:So after three months I moved out and now I live with two other students in a student house. It’s much cheaper and we like it there.
W:Good, and what about your studies? What are you studying?
M:I’m doing Computing.
W:Computing. I see. Um, apart from the language difficulties, how have you found the course?
M:Well, the main difficulty for me is getting time on the computers in the computer room. It’s always busy and this makes it very hard to do my practical work.
W:Can you reserve time in the computer room?
M:No, … but it would certainly help if we could reserve computer time.
W:Yes, I’ll look into that and see if something can be done to improve things over there.
Text 9.
W:Okay, Mr. Taylor, let’s go ahead and begin. First of all, tell me about your last job.
M:Well, as stated on my resume, I worked for five years at Hi Tech Computers.
W:Okay. Hi Tech. And what do you know about computer networks and operating systems including DOS, Windows, Macintosh OS, and UNLX?
M:Umm … well … I did come in contact with computers every night at my last job.
W:Hum! … And how about web site authoring skills? [Oh]. We are looking for someone to create and manage our company’s web site which would include the development, configuration, and use of CGI scripts.
M:Umm … uh, web page, web page. Huh … I don’t think I’ve read that book, and I’m afraid I’ve never used those CGI things.
W:Huh?! And what about experience with Java or JavaScript?
M:Well … I think I’ve tried Java at a foreign coffee shop one time, if that’s what you mean.
W:Okay, Mr. Taylor, I think I have all the information I need!
M:Oh, and I really like computer games. I play them every day.
W:Right, right. Thanks Mr. Taylor. We’ll be in touch.
