The insult mimicked that of an Iraqi journalist who hurled his shoe at George Bush while the American President was speaking in Baghdad.
The shoe landed a metre away from Premier Wen Jiabao, who is on a five day tour to Europe which has been dogged by free-Tibet demonstrations.
The protestor screamed: "This is a scandal."
He was then bundled out of the concert hall by university security staff.
As he was dragged out he shouted: "How can the university prostitute itself with this dictator?"
Mr Wen hesitated for a few moments in his speech before continuing.
He said: "This despicable behaviour cannot stand in the way of friendship between China and the UK."
He received a round of applause from the audience, who were apparently mostly Chinese students.
On Sunday, a group of pro-Tibet protesters were arrested after they tried to charge towards the Chinese Premier'ss motorcade as he visited the Chinese embassy in London.
Police made five arrests for public order offences after protesters jumped over security barriers and tried to push past officers to get to the doors of the building as Mr Wen arrived.
It is thought a small number of their group were trying to take the Free Tibet flag to the doors of the Embassy near London's Regents Park.
Mr Wen was GREeted by around 200 noisy pro-Tibet protesters and a rival pro-China demonstration of 100 people facing each other outside the embassy.
