TOKYO—An increasing number of Japanese youths are going abroad with one-year working-holiday visas(签证),hoping to gain advantages over competitors in Japan's tight job market.

Young Japanese are also going overseas in search of things they cannot find at home, such as freedom from cultural norms(标准)and more adventurous jobs.

Working holidays have shot up in popularity in Japan in the past few years.According to the Japan Association for Working Holiday Makers, a total of 16,871Japanese youths obtained working-holiday visas last year, but only 1,780 in 1985.

Japan established the working-holiday visa programme together with Australia,Canada,New Zealand,France,Germany,South Korea and Britain.Under the programme, participants are allowed to stay in a designated country for up to a year while they take temporary jobs to pay travel costs.

The visas, issued to individuals(个人)only once in a lifetime, are available to people between the ages of 18and 30,except in theU.K., which accepts people aged from 18to 25.

Nearly 9,000youths from Japan went to Australia in 2000.Canada was the second most popular destination(目的地).

“About 60to 70per cent of those in the working-holiday programme are women. Most of them go overseas after working for a company for a few years,”said Takeshi Abe,head of the government-backed working-holiday association.

He said a main reason that young people go overseas with the working-holiday visas is to improve their foreign language ability so they can get better jobs when they return to Japan.Other reasons include looking for challenges overseas and“finding themselves”.And some participants,Abe said, are simply tired of Japan and want to get out.

Yuko Kudo,28,who has been to Australia with the programme, said that she decided to quit her job as a secretary and learn English.“I wanted to get a better job during the recession and,to do so,I needed to brush up my English by going to Australia in a cheaper way,”she said.
