Academic relief and excitement about family reunions show in the faces of Chinese people beginning their winter break this month. It feels a little like Christmas in the United States, but then again it doesn't.

Superficially speaking, both the major Chinese and the major Western holidays come during the cold season, which in both cases calls for extra eating.

Cookies and cupcakes begin just after Thanksgiving in November and show up everywhere from the boss' desk to the fireplace mantle. Turkey, mashed potatoes and other food that insulates a body from cold come later.

A deeper similarity is tradition-or the distortion of it. Christmas, as the letters "Christ" suggest, began as a holiday to celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ. Many people pray on this day, but others have severed or minimized the religious connection.

Urban Chinese people, though they don't plan to sow seeds this month, still celebrate on the big day for farmers.

Followers of both holidays also reunite with close family members and get in touch with more distant ones.

East and West traditions also diverge. While Chinese people travel to the homes of elder relatives, Americans usually call or send cards.

Westerners prefer Christmas carols to fireworks. On Christmas, family gifts come by the stack instead of one by one, since adults may have only day free to celebrate.

But the most curious difference concerns students. Chinese people headed home for Spring Festival sometimes report getting bored by the end of vacation, yet American students seldom get bored around Christmas and western New Year.

Not everyone follows or enjoys classic holiday traditions. They may get upset, as excess homework, travel complexities or bad family relations may distrupt the relatively short US holiday season.

In US schools, students from first to 12th grade start a two-week vacation around December 20, but the semester doesn't end.

Classes often resume on January 2 or 3, with teachers preparing students for exams a week or two later.

Many teachers expect students to finish homework assignments during the break.

December 31 usually brings New Year's Eve parties with decorations and more sweets.

Vacations for college students are complex, as well. They welcome a break after final exams, but many must travel to see parents. Holiday travel in the US is as difficult as in China.

Some students also work part-time to earn money for tuition, so they visit only on key days, such as December 24 and 25. A few avoid family because of disputes with parents or siblings, celebrating the holiday with friends or classmates instead.

Questions:

1. Academic relief (para. 1) probably means ________.

2. What is the original meaning of Christmas?

3. What is the similary between Spring Festival and Christmas?

4. How many days do American students have for their Christmas holiday?

5. What is the main idea of the passage?
